After Ten Years of Litigation, a Jury Awards Man $175,000 in Damages for Being Wrongfully Jailed and Prosecuted While Detective Knew He Was Innocent

A jury recently reached a verdict in favor of plaintiff Mr. Raheem Crews, a Roosevelt man, awarding him $175,000 after it was discovered that the Nassau County Police Department and former Nassau Detective Nicholas Lemma let him sit in jail for 125 days for a crime that he didn’t commit.

As the detective on the case, Detective Lemma decided to stay quiet after he discovered information on a computer record showing that Mr. Crews was, in fact, in jail when a 2005 armed robbery, for which he was being prosecuted, occurred. Mr. Crews, who was represented by Frederick K. Brewington and Gregory Calliste, Jr. at trial, alleged malicious prosecution after having spent time in jail for a robbery he didn't commit.

During the time spent in jail, Mr. Crews was subject to humiliation, including strip searches and threats from other inmates, who stole his meals and sneakers. He was threatened regularly and frequently spent his nights crying himself to sleep as a result of the environment he was in. Detective Lemma had openly admitted to being overworked as the reason that he failed to take note of and investigate the discrepancy he discovered which would have freed Mr. Crews.
