FEMALE AFRICAN-AMERICAN ATTORNEY CLAIMS CIVIL RIGHTS VIOLATIONS AGAINST BABYLON DINER

Frederick K. Brewington filed a notice of claim on November 12 on behalf of Ghenya Grant against the Infinity Diner in Babylon. The claim states that the diner violated Ms. Grant’s civil rights when she was forcibly removed from the establishment for refusing to give up her seat.

On August 16, Ms. Grant, a female African-American attorney, entered the diner and sat down. While waiting for a friend, she moved to another booth where she felt more comfortable. After being asked to move back to her original booth and give up her table for a white family, Ms. Grant refused, which prompted the manager to contact the authorities. When Suffolk County Police arrived, they proceeded to physically remove Ms. Grant from the premises. One of the officers allegedly shoved Ms. Grant into a glass door before she and her friend, who is also African-American, were forced to leave.

Ms. Grant asked if she was removed from the diner because of the color of her skin and the officer allegedly replied, “Yes.”

In addition to the diner and its owner, the claim names Suffolk County, the Suffolk County Police Department and SCPD Officers Matthew Friedich, Michael Sweet, and Robert Mroczkowski as defendants.

A court date has not been set at this time. Click here to read the notice of claim.
