Frederick K. Brewington Responds to Leading Presidential Candidates’ Attitudes towards Muslims

On September 23, Frederick K. Brewington, along with other Long Island Muslim leaders, held a press conference in response to Donald Trump and Dr. Ben Carson’s attitudes towards Muslims. During the press conference, Mr. Brewington openly supported the acceptance of Muslim Americans, and expressed his disappointment with those who would remain silent as Mr. Trump did after being questioned.

When Mr. Trump recently fielded questions from a supporter who stated that President Barack Obama was a Muslim and not an American citizen, he was roundly criticized for allowing the gentleman’s statement to go uncorrected. Dr. Carson recently stated that it would not be good for American to have a Muslim president, especially if he or she followed sharia law.

“Silence speaks to your acceptance of this misinformation,” Mr. Brewington said of Mr. Trump. He urged both Mr. Trump and Dr. Carson to “stop being ignorant candidates,” and went on to describe how their comments may negatively impact the acceptance of “our brothers and our sisters who are of the Islamic tradition.”
