Civil rights attorney Frederick K. Brewington spoke to a group of concerned students and parents at the Hempstead Public Library on March 18 as part of the “Our Schools, Our Future!” Community Education Series. The first part of the series, “Our School Board & District” addressed the truth about the schools in the Hempstead School District, the budget and the role a strong school board can have on the schools and the children.

Mr. Brewington discussed the school district’s poor academic performance — especially in math and English — as well as its low graduation rate, its high dropout rate, its spending practices and lack of consistent leadership.
