Dolores Sharpe, African-American Female Nassau County Police Officer, Arraigned on Criminal Charges

On January 9, Dolores Sharpe ― an African-American woman and a veteran of the Nassau County Police Department ― was arraigned following false criminal charges of resisting arrest filed by her fellow officers. These charges arose from a November 29, 2013 incident where Officer Sharpe was wrongfully treated, falsely arrested and abused at the hands of Officers Charles L. Volpe and Victor J. Gladitz.

On Friday, November 29, 2013, Officer Sharpe was confronted by another member of the Department who exhibited an uncontrolled level of aggression, abusive language and a vindictive nature. Officer Volpe’s decision to become vulgar, verbally abusive and physically threatening to Officer Sharpe, along with the use of verbal threats and unnecessary physical force by Officer Gladitz, who are both out of the Fifth Precinct, mark a series of improper acts against Officer Sharpe that not only violated her rights as a citizen, but violated numerous procedures, rules and regulations for which each of these officers should be made to answer. Then the misuse of arrest, and the filing of false charges of resisting arrest against Officer Sharpe has only served to make a bad situation worse.

During this time, Officer Sharpe was forced to endure the act of being cursed at; handcuffed in public; having the unauthorized removal of her service weapon from her; disrespected in multiple ways; having her credentials snatched from her possession; and then physically grabbed, slammed, and handled by the officers — all without reason or legal authority.

Officer Sharpe continues to demand the dismissal of all charges, immediate full restoration to duty, with full back pay and that her weapons and property be returned.
