AT THE FIRM

The Law Offices of Frederick K. Brewington Welcomes Summer Associates from the Class of 2018

Each year for the past 23 years, The Law Offices of Frederick K. Brewington has hired law students as part of its Summer Associate Program. This program was instituted by Mr. Brewington and his wife, the Rev. Adrienne Brewington, to provide opportunities for law students who had an interest in the area of Civil Rights and to encourage and foster students who have a desire to explore and experience what it is like to work in a fast-paced, small law firm that is involved in high-profile Civil Rights work and Litigation. The positions are highly competitive and normally start the first week of June and continue into the middle of August.

As students, the Summer Associates are asked to assist in drafting and responding to discovery requests, assist in file review and preparation for trial. Their experience includes New York State law and Federal law. Students are required to have a dedication to their academic pursuits, as well as a solid understanding of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and Federal Rules of Evidence. Under the supervision of lawyers, the Summer Associates have client contact, firsthand experience in court proceedings and engage in a number of research and writing projects.

This year, The Law Offices of Frederick K. Brewington has selected three outstanding law students and one college student who are up-and-coming attorneys in training as Summer Associates and one Intern. It is our pleasure to introduce you to Isabel Rajabzadeh, Joan Howell, Sana Hussain, and Gulfam H. Dhillon. We encourage you to read their bios, which are part of this article. Each of them comes to us with a wonderful and interesting background. They each have an interest and are committed to Civil Rights work and seek to use their law degrees to follow the tradition of Civil Rights lawyers in being social engineers for the public good.

Isabel Rajabzadeh is a 2019 Juris Doctorate candidate at Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center with a deep passion for civil rights and immigration law. She is a graduate of St. John’s University, with a degree in Journalism. Having traveled abroad, Ms. Rajabzadeh has enriched her life experiences with an expanded understanding of the legal and political systems. Ms. Rajabzadeh is passionate about justice issues and the impact of systems on the lives of people. It is this passion that fuels her commitment to helping make meaningful change that will have a long-lasting effect. As part of her law school experience, she serves as President of Touro Law’s Immigration Law Society, Vice President of the Student Bar Association, and is on the Law Review staff. Ms. Rajabzadeh dreams of helping people through the practice of law, and her current position as a Summer Associate for the Law Offices of Frederick K. Brewington is assisting in sharpening her legal, analytical, and writing skills.

Joan Howell is entering her final year of law school, attending Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Justice Studies with a minor in English from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. She is a proud member of the Black Law Students Association at Hofstra Law. Prior to attending law school, Ms. Howell worked for two prominent criminal defense attorneys for five years who were both on the Death Penalty Panel. Ms. Howell is the first generation in her family to attend law school and she aspires to be a moving force in her local community in the area of Civil Rights and Criminal Defense. Upon earning her law degree, she intends to seek justice for individuals who are in need of representation. From all of the opportunities that she has been afforded both in her personal life and in the legal profession, Ms. Howell has developed a great respect for the judicial system. In particular, Ms. Howell's understanding of the criminal justice system has contributed greatly to her determination to make a difference in the lives of others in hopes of making a change for the good of the people.

Sana Hussain is entering her second year at Touro Law School in Central Islip, New York. She is currently a member of the Federal Bar Association, International Refugee Assistance Project and was recently admitted onto the Touro Law Review. Prior to law school, she was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Stony Brook University. Ms. Hussain aspires to practice in New York and use her Juris Doctorate degree to give back to her community. She hopes to use her experiences and utilize the law to be a fierce advocate for vulnerable populations and defend individuals who are in dire need of representation. Ms. Hussain sees her legal education as a tool that will enhance her abilities in mentoring minorities and helping them reach their true potential.

Gulfam H. Dhillon joined the Law Offices of Frederick K. Brewington as a Summer Intern in mid-June. His status is that of a Summer Intern, as opposed to a Summer Associate, because Mr. Dhillon is currently a sophomore at St. John’s University majoring in English. Mr. Dhillon is also a member of St. John’s’ nationally recognized Mock Trial team and has exhibited extraordinary skill, legal reasoning and understanding of the legal process far beyond his peers. Being the youngest member of the summer student group at The Law Offices of Frederick K. Brewington, at the age of 19, Gulfam is also the youngest student ever chosen by our office to work as an intern focused strictly on legal work, as opposed to clerical. He aims to exceed the expectations being placed on him and is a hardworking, dedicated young man who has a bright future. He has set his sights on being intellectually competitive and second to none in the discipline of law. Mr. Dhillon has committed himself to helping individuals who require assistance to ensure that they will receive fair treatment in our country, including those who have traditionally been underserved, underrepresented and disrespected.
