A Thank You To Those Who Are On The Front Line And Those Who Laid A Foundation

Beloved Siblings in the Struggle,

I remain stoked by the energy we as advocates bring. I was recently interviewed about the position statement issued by the local District Attorney and told her it was vague, lacking in backbone and clearly not an attempt to address the deep societal ills that many of us recognize and push hard for every day. Where we find ourselves today is at a point of understanding that “There had to be People in the Streets to move the People in the Suites” (That’s what I told the reporter). That is also what is now allowing all the Johnny-come-lately politicians to dip their toes into the pool of social consciousness and try to ride a wave of public opinion that cannot be denied. What we need to realize is that the thought and structure created by all those in our ranks who have dared to speak truth and justice to the powers that be, and have been engaged for years, has helped to create the mold for the change which is taking place and which must not be discounted. The murder of George Floyd and it being brought into every household, every handheld device and every platform in the world has been the flashpoint for what many of those out there right now, refused to acknowledge, or at least refused to respond to, until now. This is a movement which has the ability to bring about monumental change and help begin to address problems that find themselves wedded to the sin of Racism and subjugation of groups of people who have been part of our national DNA for 400 years. The time is now and how it is addressed will be a test. Many thanks go to all those who stand now to push back against the ever-present tide of racism, indifference and backward thinking.

There are those of us that know what a shackle Qualified Immunity has been in bringing the light of justice into courtrooms all across America. We now have the stage to help address it. Because Civil Rights activists and lawyers, and those on whose behalf we speak have experienced the lack of training of police — we are particularly positioned to assist and round out the narrative and inject serious and real options for change. The list goes on. The need for, and bringing about, social change is a complex process. Right now, the voices, minds and bodies of young and not-so-young activists, who know there is something wrong, require the work that has been forged over years and that those who have done some groundwork make it available to them as they are challenged with the question of “What is it you want us to do?” The “why” is now being articulated, the “what” and “how” is part of what we all now must help bring to the table. Stay encouraged and stay strong — the battle for change is upon us.
