RECENT VERDICTS AND SETTLEMENTS
$7.75 million- Civil Rights and wrongful death action brought by the family of deceased

$4.7 million- Repeated verbal and physical assaults on Yemeni-American employee, while supervisor failed to protect employee and discipline the assailant

$1.277 million- Race based attack and serious injury by violent acts against Plaintiffs, who were lured to an isolated warehouse

$2.8 million- Wrongful death, products liability case involving a tow motor accident at a sewage treatment plant

Brooklyn Federal Jury Awards $8.32 Million against Nassau Police and Hempstead Police for Violations of Civil Rights of Mentally Disabled Man

Shuay'b Greenaway, Avery Knight and Sharon Knight — three of the firm's clients — were awarded a total of $8.32 million by a federal jury in Brooklyn against Nassau County and Hempstead Village police officers who falsely imprisoned and Tasered Mr. Greenaway, although he never posed a threat to the officers. The lawsuit cited violations of false imprisonment under the Fourth Amendment and New York State law, trespass, excessive force under the Fourth Amendment, assault and battery, failure to stop the abuse and municipal liability.

Each year for the past 22 years, The Law Offices of Frederick K. Brewington has hired law students as part of its Summer Associate Program. This program was instituted by Mr. Brewington and his wife, the Rev. Adrienne Brewington, to provide opportunities for law students who had an interest in the area of civil rights and to encourage and foster students who have a desire to explore and experience what it is like to work in a fast-paced small law firm that is involved in high-profile civil rights work and litigation. The positions are highly competitive and normally start the first week of June and continue into the middle of August.

Ronald Lanier, Retired African-American Nassau County Correction Officer, Hits Village of Garden City with Federal Civil Rights Lawsuit
Garden City Police Department Sued for Violating His Constitutional Rights and Racial Profiling

On June 1, retired Correction Officer Ronald Lanier, who is an African-American man and a twenty-two-and-a-half-year veteran of the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department, announced the filing of his federal civil rights suit against the Village of Garden City, the Garden City Police Department and several of its officers.

On June 13, Frederick K. Brewington was presented with the Haywood Burns Award by the New York State Bar Association Committee on Civil Rights during a special remembrance and award ceremony at CUNY (City University of New York) Law School in Long Island City.

African-American Chief Physician’s Assistant Pursues Claims of Discrimination, Retaliation and a Racially Hostile Work Environment at Nassau County Hospital

Thomas Wooding, an African-American chief physician's assistant at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, New York, has been granted a motion to pursue claims of discrimination, retaliation and a racially hostile work environment under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the New York State Human Rights Law (NYSHRL), Section 1981 and the New York Labor Law (NYLL) against the hospital and his superiors — Herbert Perry, Scott Gorenstein, Charles Occhipinti, and Francesca Bieniek — and Donna Hangan, who also worked at the hospital.
