Frederick K. Brewington, esq.

Founding Attorney and Principal

A product of his positive upbringing in the Lakeview community in Nassau County, Attorney Frederick K. Brewington is the founder and principal of the Law Offices of Frederick K. Brewington in Hempstead, New York. He graduated with honors from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology with minors in African and Afro-American Studies and Theater in 1979. He furthered his education at Northeastern University School of Law by earning his Juris Doctor degree and had the honor of being named Commencement Student Speaker by his peers in 1982. Attorney Brewington has been admitted to the bars of the State of New York; State of New Jersey; United States District Courts in the Northern District of New York, Southern District of New York, Eastern District of New York, and New Jersey District; the United States Court of Appeals in the First and Second Circuits; and the Supreme Court of the United States of America.

Mr. Brewington is a fierce community advocate and highly respected attorney who is proud to have built a distinguished legal career over the last 40 years. Immediately after law school, he worked at several prestigious law offices and clerked at the Office of the Legal Counsel of the United States Senate. Attorney Brewington’s legal and educational endeavors eventually led him to open his own practice in June 1987. As a major component of his practice, he has opted to take on the challenges of civil rights litigation, including the successful challenge to the “at large” voting systems in the Town of Hempstead (Nassau County) and in the Town of Islip (Suffolk County), a monumental and career-defining case that has prevented unconstitutional and discriminator purging of voters from the voting role across Long Island. Attorney Brewington’s sustained commitment to justice also spans issues of police misconduct, employment discrimination, housing discrimination, and criminal defense, where he has achieved successful and positive outcomes for scores of clients.

Attorney Brewington is a tireless advocate, and he is devoted to representing his clients and community compassionately, competently, honestly, and fearlessly. It is this attitude that earns him respect among his professional peers and in the community at large, both of whom have presented him with numerous accolades and awards. His concerns about affordable housing, community revitalization, employment, civil rights, provision for social services, municipal liability, the environment, and voting rights have been and continue to be addressed by his aggressive approach against injustice through litigating, writing, lecturing, and making personal appearances at various events. Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “My dream is deeply rooted in the American Dream,” and Mr. Brewington sustains that vision by ensuring that the greatest right of Americans is the right to protest for rights. Through his litigation, his praiseworthy ability as a public speaker for countless community organizations, and his leadership on many civic boards, Mr. Brewington never ceases to call his fellow citizens to fulfill the noble promises in our Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Attorney Brewington has been labeled “The People’s Lawyer”, and among the dozens of honors that he has received, the titles of two of his awards epitomize his exceptional legal and community engagement: “Keeper of the Dream” and “Guardian of Liberty”. He is the recipient of the Long Island Business News’ Leadership in Law Lifetime Achievement Award, The New York State Bar Association Committee on Civil Rights Haywood Burns Memorial Award, The Hon. William Gitelman Award of the Nassau Lawyers' Association of Long Island, Inc., Hofstra University’s First Michael D’Innocenzo Award for Outstanding Contributions to Constructive Public Dialogue, and he has been added to the Long Island Press POWERLIST of the 50 Most Influential People on Long Island.

Attorney Brewington currently holds board membership for numerous community-based organizations, including but not limited to, the United Methodist Church General Board of Church and Society (GBCS), the United Methodist Church City Society, the Nassau County Bar Association, ERASE Racism, Inc., Long Island Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives, the National Police Accountability Project (NPAP), the Lakeview Youth Federation, Inc., and Long Island Housing Services. In addition, Mr. Brewington diligently teaches as an Adjunct Professor at the Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center located at Touro University. He served as President of the Alumni Association of SUNY at Albany and remains a member of its Council of Classes. Attorney Frederick K. Brewington continues to make service a priority, including serving as a convenor of grassroots community-based organizations such as The Corridor Counts, Inc. (TCC) and Long Island Advocates for Police Accountability (LIAFPA), a volunteer football coach for over 42 years in the Malverne School District, a youth mentor, and by acting as an advisor to many community groups on a pro bono basis.
