A group of Hempstead residents and advocates protested today outside of Garden City Village Hall, citing many civil rights and affordable housing violations.

They feel the village has not been forthcoming about the violations. Mimi Pierre Johnson, of New York Communities for Change, says it's taken ten years for the courts to hear their case.

Johnson hopes the group's actions will open the doors to affordable housing for those that want to live in the village. She says she believes zoning was changed specifically to keep affordable housing for minorities out of Garden City.
The case will begin on Monday, June 17, in federal court in Islip.
